2019 Speakers

Rosemary Downes

Rosemary is a woman of faith, an encourager and inspirer of others. She has a passion for life, family and for people being all they can be. The Heart Conference has grown out of her love for God and women. Her vision and belief is that women can connect to God and each other is a powerful manner.

Bruce Downes

Bruce through The Catholic Guy television program and various online programs is seen in over 130 countries around the world. As a 15 year old he believed this is what he was meant to do with his life and today his programs are seen in millions of homes. Bruce seeks to proclaim the Gospel in a life application manner where people encounter Christ and then helps them apply their ‘faith to life.’ From prisoners to business people, both men and women and from young to older, people are left encouraged and uplifted as they experience a deeper connection to God through the ministry of Bruce.

Emma McGinniss

Emma McGinniss is passionate about helping people and encouraging them to make God a central part of their everyday, normal lives. Emma and her husband operate a small business, and care for their beautiful daughter. Despite the demands of life, Emma makes time to volunteer in a large variety of ministry activities. This includes financial administration, music ministry, children’s ministry and youth ministry. Emma likes to focus on initiatives that are modern and contemporary and bring people to a personal relationship with Jesus.

Fr Joseph Parkinson

Fr Joseph Parkinson has been priest of the Archdiocese of Perth (Western Australia) for over 35 years. He has served as assistant priest and parish priest in a number of parishes in the Archdiocese and was Director of Catholic Youth Ministry for six years. His substantive position since 2003 has been Director of the L J Goody Bioethics Centre, an agency of the Archdiocese providing research, education and consultancy in personal, professional, public and healthcare ethics.

Fr Parkinson holds a Licence in Moral Theology from the Alphonsian Academy in Rome (Italy), and a PhD in Moral Theology from the University of Notre Dame Australia. He sits on the Human Research and Clinical Ethics committees of St John of God Healthcare Inc, the Reproductive Technology Council at the Health Department of WA, and the Clinical Ethics Consultancy Service of the Women’s and Children’s Health Service of WA serving both The Perth Children’s Hospital and King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. He is also a Trustee of St John of God Healthcare, and an honorary fellow of Australian Catholic University.

Fr Joe’s current areas of research include professional ethics in Catholic ministry, pastoral care of same-sex attracted persons, and bioethics in public policy debates.

Peter & Marion Shakhovskoy

Marian and Peter Shakhovskoy have been married for 43 years. Marian’s background is in teaching and educational research; Peter’s is as an electrical engineer.  They have five sons and 10 grandchildren.  Both of them have experienced great personal benefit in the Ignatian Exercises in Daily Life, and Peter is now a part of the Faber team in Brisbane, providing the Exercises to many people each year. He is also co-founder of MenAlive, a Brisbane-based team which provides retreats for men, and for men and their teenage sons, across Australia and New Zealand.

Michele Allum

Michele Allum is currently working in resource development for the L J Goody Bioethics Centre. She has been facilitating workshops in human sexuality and relationships with Loving for Life, a Catholic organisation, for 10 years.

Previously, Michele worked as an ambulance paramedic for over a decade. She is heavily involved in Parish and school life. Of all her roles, Michele most enjoys being a wife and mum.

Martin Scroope

Martin Scroope is the Director of the Canisius Centre of Ignatian Spirituality. He is married with three adult children. Martin taught for 21 years in Jesuit schools. From 2001-2013, he was the founding Director of the Loyola Institute – a centre for formation and leadership, and focused on Ignatian spirituality, ministry and leadership. He has worked with many Australian Catholic school communities, congregations and Jesuit institutions.

Heart Resources

Heart Ministry for Women is a great place for women to get together and share life and faith.
