Walking in Blind Faith or is it?

Little children are so perceptive. They listen and understand way more than we think. There are also certain ages when their questions surprise you. You often wonder what started this train of thought?

At the office just recently Willow, who is my six-year-old granddaughter, came with her Mum to work. She had been sick and was recovering, just left with a lingering cough. (Since covid you cannot send them to school if they have a cough.) She was quietly colouring in at a spare desk when she got up and walked over to her Mum.

“Mum, you is the Boss here?” After her Mum replied she walked over to John’s desk, who is our bookkeeper.

“John, if you got fired what would you do?”

The look on John’s face was shock. What a question from a little girl.

“I don’t know,” was his reply.

“Ok. Well would you go work at Bunnings?” (A large hardware store here.)

“I guess so?”

He was still flabbergasted at the question.

Willow then walked back to her Mum’s desk and asked the same question of her.

“Mum, if you got fired, what would you do?” the short silence did not last long, and Willow answered the question herself. “Would you become a Fire-fighter?”

Why a fire-fighter? What sparked that thought?

I asked Melissa later what her reply to that was. She said she did not get a chance to reply because her husband who overheard the conversation was laughing so much.

Why the questions? What had she seen, read, heard about jobs and being fired? Nobody knows.

In life there are so many questions we have, that we think about and often we don’t find the answers. Have you ever said in reply to your inquisitive children’s questions that you can’t answer – “It just is!” You expect them to believe you, in blind faith and trust that you are answering them correctly, honestly.

A dictionary definition of ‘Blind Faith’ is belief without true understanding, perception or discrimination.

We are often answering the questions without full understanding of the topic.

Is the faith that God gives us as a gift just “blind faith?”

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—

Ephesians 2:8 NRSV

This spiritual ‘blind faith’ is different. It is trusting in an Almighty God who is good and only wants the best for us.  Abraham, referred to in the bible as the Father of Faith, showed us in Genesis 22 and Hebrews 11 that his ‘blind faith’ and trust in God (asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac) occurred because he ‘reasoned’ that God had promised a great nation through his heir and that God would honour his promise, even if God had to bring Isaac back from the dead.

Abraham did not act blindly but believed in God’s word to him. From his understanding of God, from what he knew about God, he thought it through and trusted in God. Then he acted accordingly. So, Abraham used reason, wisdom and logic, with the gift of faith in trusting in God.

Has God asked you to walk in ‘blind faith’ with him?

Blind because we don’t always see the whole picture.

But with Faith because we trust in this Loving God.

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Love

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Has God asked you to walk in ‘blind faith’ with him?

When you don’t have the whole picture how have you been able you to step forward with what you believe God wants you to do?

Have you found trusting God in these circumstances difficult? Why?

I believe and trust that God’s plan for me is perfect, and yet I doubt and worry and have fearful thoughts! I believe! Help my unbelief! I love your suggestions Rosemary to look back at all the times God had been there for me and gotten me through. Why would this time be any different? Thank you for your jottings and for Heart Catholic Women. You make a difference!

Maureen, I could not have said it any better. I never ever doubt that God will answer my prayers so, why at times, do doubts come to mind and I can’t seem to shake them. As you say, I believe! Help my unbelief!

Committing to being a host at Impacters Online, the online faith community of The Catholic Guy Ministry, has definitely been a walk in faith. It has taken me so far out of my comfort zone but I think I just knew in my heart that God would be with me every step of the way. And He has! In ways that I could never have imagined! I am so thankful and grateful that I took that leap of faith. With God, ALL things are possible.
