Sweet or Savory?
Do you have a sweet or savory tooth?
Let me explain further. When you go to a party do you lean towards savory nibbles or the sweet items?
I’m a sweet tooth myself and sometimes need to restrain myself from eating too much sugar.
Then I read a prayer calling Jesus, our life, our sweetness and our hope.
Oh, I was stopped in my tracks when I meditated upon the sweetness of Jesus.
In the book of Psalms it states:
How sweet are your words to my taste,
Psalm 119:103 NRSV
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Jesus’ words are like sweet honey to our lips.
A balm for our souls.
A soothing oil to our spirits.
And Jesus’ words are like:
Pleasant words are like a honeycomb,
Proverbs 16:24 NRSV
sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
And so we are encouraged in Psalm 34
O taste and see that the Lord is good;
Psalm 34:8 NRSV
happy are those who take refuge in him.
Encouraged to have a personal experience of Him. To just have a taste and you’ll be going back for more just like your sweet tooth or savory tooth wanting more.
Our sweet Jesus also has this fragrance, this aroma that is full of self- giving love.
He has given this fragrant offering and sacrifice to God for us.
This is described in Ephesians:
and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Ephesians 5:2 NRSV
So next time you are eating savory or sweet food be reminded of what Jesus has done for us.
May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’
