Trust in Him

I arrived at my desk for the beginning of the work week. There is a sheet of paper on it. As I sat down on my chair I could see the beautiful handwriting on it. Getting out my glasses I read a letter from my granddaughter, Willow, who is 7.

Dear Grammie,

Our class is learning about being safe and how we can help ourselves stay safe by talking to people we trust. You are a person on my trusted network.

I ask that you will:

  • Help me when I am unsafe
  • Listen to me when my warning signs won’t go away.

Kind regards,

Willow.

After I finished reading it, I thought I needed to reply to her and I also thought about who is in my trusted network?

Hopefully I will never need to go to them when I feel unsafe. But we should be prepared.

Thank God we had prepared our children when they were younger.

My children many years ago were saved by our next-door neighbour when some people tried to break into the house when I had just gone down the street to return a video. The shop was 2 minutes from our house. Some people must have noticed that I had left and so tried to break through the front door. Two of my children who were still at home heard the commotion and quickly rang the phone number of our neighbours that we had on the emergency list beside the microwave. This was our trusted safe list.

My eldest daughter Emma was very intelligent and told me later she did not ring the police, because she thought they would take too long to get there. Our Neighbour David came out with his rottweiler. He told me later that the 2 men who saw him, just stopped attacking the door with the crowbar and walked unhurriedly down the street. They only started to run when he let his dog off the lead.

So, who do we trust?

Surely top of our list is Our God.

Two scriptures come to mind.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own insight.

In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NRSV

This scripture from Proverbs advises all of us to trust in the Lord and not rely on our own understanding. Remember God has our future in His hands and only wants good for us so rely on Him to choose the best for us. We often don’t get it and rarely understand so many things. We are too limited and frail whereas God is unlimited and eternally strong and faithful.

 ‘My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.’

Psalm 91:2 NRSV

Then in the book of Psalms, David declares God as a refuge and fortress. One in whom we can trust.

Do we go to God with all our fears when we feel unsafe? Discouraged? Troubled? Worried? Anxious? Unsure?

He is the One who should be on the top of everyone’s list.

Stay safe by talking to Him and trusting in His advice.

Talk to Him before the problems escalate, while there are warning signs. God will not reject or ridicule you for feeling the way you do. He loves that you want to share with Him and that you trust Him.

So is He on your Trust Network List?

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Love

Every week groups of ladies meet together to chat about the things I raise in my weekly blog post and to chat about life in general. We call these ‘Heart Connect’ groups.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Who are the people in your life that you trust? What is it about them that makes them trustworthy?

Do you find God trustworthy? Do you confide in him?

If you don’t trust in God why do you think that is? What do you need to feel that you can go to God with your needs?

Trust in Him is very apt for me today. As once again a medical problem has appeared, I know that it will be on my long list once more, as I ask for assistance from our God. I know that He has everything organised, I just have to wait, praying while wait. All will be good, He has this once more, I place my trust in Him. Amen
