The doorbell rang incessantly. The chatter behind the door brought a rush of joy to my heart. As the door opened, I heard these words coming from the mouth of a three-year-old little boy.

Trying to restrain himself physically Emmett asked, “Where can I cuddle you, Pa?”

My heart melted even more.

Emmett is always such a bundle of energy, and he was wanting to be careful because his Pa had just had an operation.

When I heard the love and understanding that came out of this little one, I thought “Oh we need to learn this lesson.” The lesson of care and understanding towards someone other than himself. Of not only voicing care but following it through by his actions of consideration.

Many of us, like Emmett, were taught to be considerate of others but there are also many who were never taught this while still young. Ah but it is never too late with God!

Jesus came and told all who would hear to love the Lord your God and love your neighbour…..

STOP! Do we love our neighbour? Do we consider our neighbour? Do we go out of our way to care for our neighbour? I’m sure most of us try and love and care for ourselves in so many areas of our lives but do we put God and our neighbour before us?

In John 15:12 Jesus states in his new commandment,

“Love one another as I have loved you.”

John 15:12

Jesus sacrificed himself for us – he loved us completely.

Jesus wants us to love our neighbour like that. Caring for them, looking out for them, no matter who they are.

In Ephesians 4:32 the scripture says,

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Ephesians 4:32

That’s what Emmett did – looked out for the interests of his Pa. Do we look out for the interests of our fellow man?? Even in such a small way as not to do what we want but instead to consider the needs of others?

Do we follow the example of Christ?

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Love
