Willow came back from day-care very excited. She is my 4 four-year-old granddaughter. She and Jessie, her best friend, were asked to build a house. They put in cushions for the walls to keep safe, they said. Then a blanket for a roof to keep off the rain. Then Willow told her mum, “We put in a makeup table so we could put our lipstick on and perfume.”

I laughed when I heard this. The essentials that Willow thought were needed.

It made me think of what truly is essential? Especially since recently Bruce, my husband, and I moved house and we were packing or throwing away what we thought we needed.

What is important in life? What do we truly need? Or are they all wants? Desires? And that is not wrong either but is it excessive? Some of us own so much. Do we appreciate what we do have?

Things are just things. What is necessary?

Jesus shared often how things, belongings can sometimes get in the way of the most important things in our lives.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

Matthew 19:23-24 NRSV

Jesus may not be asking us to live as puritans but maybe he’s asking us individually to check what do we need? What would Jesus like me to live like?

Remember though to be like little Willow. God himself loves to give us gifts! Just remember to look at your heart.

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Love

Rosemary your jottings inspire me always. I read them on my way to work and glorify God for putting people like you in our midst. They are simply jottings packed with vivid meaning and that God is the way and the truth for as long as we shall live on this earth. Be blessed too and thank you

Thank you Rosemary for reminding me! I have quite a few things I would like to donate to St Vincent de Paul BUT haven’t got around to it yet! I have stacks of books I need to return to their owners but haven’t been able to due to Lock down. Actually I had them all placed in a bag ready to bring back in my wardrobe, but I’d forget! I am a horder and I have items that I have difficulty letting go of! So again I thank you for this timely message! Lock down will be lifting very soon, this will then enable me to give back, give away, give to those who are more in need than I am! God bless you Rosemary!
