Being Happy, Holy and Healthy

As I locked the door and spun around on my heel, the next few seconds were a bit of a blur. It had been a rainy day and just coming in from the outside my shoes were wet. Not a good idea to spin I thought but too late. One leg went to the left, the other leg to the right and my bottom landed on the floor. Within the few short seconds I had before I landed on the hard tiles, my brain told me to protect my arm and leg.  God was very good to me, except for a few bruises and aches and pains, I was fine. No one even happened to be in the foyer at the time, so did not see my “downfall.”

Later I was reflecting upon how it could have happened to anyone. Young or old, no matter your age. Just the other day one of my six-year-old granddaughters had fallen over in her sneakers. The shoes I was wearing were even sensible shoes. That has not always been the case but as I get older, I feel like my ankles can’t take the sky-high heels I used to wear.

Then my thoughts went to “as I am getting older” I still want to be able to do so much that I used to do. I realise that I just need to adjust a bit. The saying of, “If you don’t use it, you lose it” is so true! I’ve learnt to adjust accordingly in the Zumba classes I go to. I’ve had to adjust over the years with a lot of exercises, with certain sports, due to a bad shoulder that I injured when I was fifteen.

After a lot of the dance moves of Zumba, some using weights the instructor always end classes with core moves on the floor. My problem is I can get down on the floor ok but getting up I look like a beached whale. I cannot put pressure or put my arms to the floor in a push up position due to the shoulder. So, after a few weeks of taking about 15 minutes to get myself clumsily off the floor at the end of the class, I now do exercises for my core standing up against a wall. Sometimes the teacher looks at me weirdly but at least I’m trying to still keep fit.

God has given each of us a physical body. He has given each of us different gifts. He desires we look after His gifts. We look after ourselves. We are “temples of the Holy Spirit.”

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?  For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NRSV

We are asked to honor God with our bodies, this is where the Spirit of God dwells within us. We are asked to honor God with how we live, what we put into our bodies, our minds, our souls.  How we even treat our bodies. God wants us to be healthy, holy and happy.

Do you look after yourself? Do you give Glory to God with and through your body? I’m not just talking about the outside appearance, that is of such little consequence compared to your heart – who you truly are.

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Love

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Do you look after yourself, acknowledging that the Spirit lives within you?

What could you do to begin honoring God with how you live your life, with what you put into your body, mind, and soul?

What are you putting into your heart so that you live as God would want you to live?

I can so relate to the challenge of getting off the floor! Your weekly “jottings” are always so real! We are at a similar stage in life. Your reminders to look for God’s goodness and seek His will resonate with me every week! Thank you for your ministry.

      Do I look after myself?
No. I am really bad at this. Trouble is that I do not feel my age which is 80 years nearly 81 years. This week I was forced to face the fact that I can no longer use a crowbar, very annoying.

How can I honour God with how I live my life. With what I put into my body , mind and soul.
      Body. Eat nutritious foods
Mind. Keep away from images, words and activities which are toxic
Soul. Feed and nurture with the word of God, daily communication with the Lord. Bible study and staying tuned in to my Lord and saviour
What am I putting in to my heart so that I live as God wants me to?
Really looking at those around me seeing God within them. Doing online Novenas from time to time. Listening to you and to Bruce
You really make us think Rosemary
      Thank you
      Val

Thank you. I’m appreciative of your sharing. Am trying to do things I run toward…helping to feed the hungry and homeless at my church every Wednesday and playing cards once a week because it keeps my mind sharp. In retirement, I care to keep busy yet miss my grandchildren who are in their twenties. They have busy lives and I’m on the fringe looking in and feeling lonely at times. My faith gets me through and I’m grateful!

Thanks for this. I’m turning a new leaf and am learning to eat intentionally and healthy! I pray that God helps me to do this. We have 2 new Grandbabies and I need strength and less pounds! Your jottings resonate with me…Gods bless you!

Thank you Rosemary for sharing with us about your experiences and difficulties in being happy, holy and healthy!!! I did some damage to my foot while skipping in the park a while back, and had to go to the doctor! The doctor told me that I am no longer 25! That I needed to do appropriate exercise for my age! So I took up resistance exercises, using elasticated cords. But I stopped!!! Then I started to go for one hour walks. This I do not as frequently as I should! I was also told by my doctor that I lacked vitamin D and getting out into the sunshine for ten minutes or so would help. So Rosemary I thank you for reminding me, to take more care of myself!!! Also when I do go out for my walks, I tend to walk beside a river or in a park, or sometimes beside the sea. This lifts up my spirit and wants me to thank our Creator God abundantly for all the beauty I see around me, and for the sound of the birds chirping away!!! There also have been times when I have stopped and sat silently praying my Personal prayers, and reading the daily Readings for Mass… Thank you again Rosemary!!! I need to get back into doing exercise indoors and outdoors, and soaking in our Loving God’s goodness and beauty in His Creation, as well as spending quiet time in prayer with Him, deepening my Loving relationship with Him!!! … Maybe I could join a walking group or gentle exercise classes… but especially spend quality, alone time with our Loving God!!! May the Lord keep blessing you Rosemary!!! And please keep up the good work in these Jottings of your Journal, sharing with us, spiritually, practically and emotionally!!!
