Are We Living As God Has Asked Us?

Are there things you have to do in life that you don’t particularly like to do?

This question struck me when a few of my grandchildren were being fussy at the dinner table. One of them, called Willow, had for many years eaten nearly everything but in the last year or so had become very fussy and did not like anything that was placed before her at dinner time. This particular night as she pushed the food around on her plate she stated to her Mum and Dad, “I can eat it, but I don’t like it. It’s not like I’m going to die from it.”

Oh, this brought a smile to my face. Where do they get these ideas from?

One of my other granddaughter’s, Peyton, was talking to her Mum about what she could eat for afternoon tea. Her Mum suggested blueberries. (Which she used to love.)

“No, I don’t like blueberries.”

“Why don’t you like blueberries?”

“I don’t know, maybe it’s the way God has made me.”

I laughed out loud at this one.

But seriously when I thought about things in life, not necessarily eating food, there are some things in life that we just have to do even when we don’t like to do them.

Things we struggle with. Things that are just not us.

Have you been in situations where you have felt you needed to speak up in defence of someone, where normally you are very passive about stuff?

Have you had to step out of your comfort zone? And I’m not talking about going on TV shows like Survivor, SAS Australia, Amazing Race etc. But about ordinary situations, circumstances of our lives that we have had to be courageous. Where we have had to step up or speak up like never before. Where we have seen injustice and needed to stop what was happening. Where we have seen discrimination and needed to speak up. Where we have seen loneliness and needed to care.

What could the Holy Spirit be talking to you about? Asking you to put your hand up, to speak up and defend someone? Are we even listening to the promptings of the Holy Spirit?

Jesus when He lived here on earth stood up for the oppressed. He cared deeply for the poor and the downtrodden. He demonstrated in many ways His compassion for them and would help by healing people, giving sight to the blind, touching the leper, and He would stand up for those being judged by religious hierarchy.

Jesus followed the way set out by God His Father and written down by King David in the book of Psalms.

Defend the weak and the fatherless;
    uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Psalm 82:3-4 NIV

Are we following the way of the Lord and being and acting how God has truly made us? Maybe not eating blueberries but definitely doing good in the world.

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Love
