Do Not Worry for the Future
Many people plan ahead. Not just for today, or for the month but for their future lives. This, in a way, is a good thing in knowing what you want to do and what you want to achieve in life, what career path you may want to take, so therefore what study you may need to do etc to achieve that dream.
As Christians we are asked to put God first. We put God into all aspects of our lives, which includes our work, our home, everything about us. God does not mind us having future plans but because we don’t know the future, He desires us to put our plans into His hands.
We need to have an attitude of “if it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” as stated in James 4:15.
Often, we just have enough light to see the next step, enough light to see the way forward for the afternoon. What will come of tomorrow? Only God knows. But we can enjoy what we can see today. We can have trust and faith in God to guide us for the steps that follow.
Knowing this (faithfulness) about our God we can walk through life with joy, not worried for the future.
‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?
Matthew 6:25-27 NRSV
As stated here so clearly, “Do NOT worry about your life.” Oh, what will become of me? How will I get by? How will we pay the bills?
Look to God for guidance, direction, the next step. He has all the wisdom. He can allow others to be gracious and generous to us. He can help us get out of debt. He can send people to help us. Nothing is impossible for God.
How did I get to thinking about this topic. Someone asked me what are my plans? What are you planning for your future? Aren’t you worried about not having enough?
No was my answer. I’m not worried but I do still plan as best as I can for my future. It is all in God’s hands.
As Matthew’s Gospel states Jesus’ words:
So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
Matthew 6:34 NRSV
This not worrying only comes about because of a trust in God’s provision and care.
Jesus had been sharing about how He cares for the birds of the air and are we not more important than the birds?
So, my future is secure in Christ as long as I surrender my life and plans into His hands. The Almighty will not let me fall.
I am a Proverbs 31:25 woman.
“She is clothed in strength and diginity. (My position is strong and secure)
She can laugh at the days to come……”. ( Knowing that she and her family are secure in Christ, no fear of the future.)
Proverbs 31:25
May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

1. We can plan to a certain extent, but it doesn’t always work out the way you planned. Often what God has planned is far better.
2. The future will be as it will be. We cannot know what hurdles or burdens will be thrown up along the way. I guess that we cannot know what only trust in the Lord, that he knows best.
3. These days, yes!

America, and the world in general, has become a terrifying place to make any plans. I am old, but I do fear for my grandchildren. I know that I have to trust in God and that His will be done no matter which human being thinks themself to be the King of the universe. Thank you for your words of wisdom. Now I need to put them into practice.

Dear Rosemary,
Thank you so much for these jottings from your journal…
God bless
