Are You Reliable?

Does it not annoy you when you have made plans and they don’t work out?

Now I’m not talking about when circumstances change, or someone gets sick and appointments need to be cancelled or moved. I’m talking about when people are continually unreliable, the same people unreliable, every time you book them into your diary week to care for someone, and it happens that they cancel on you.

I know they may not mean to but sometimes it’s better for everyone if you or they state “in this season that you are in you cannot babysit or care for my family members.”

Because the repercussions are so often that I can’t go into work, I have to cancel my appointments with others and reorganize when I can……

My Father’s words come into my mind. “Be responsible. If you say yes, it means yes. And no means no. If it does not work out be honest and say so. Don’t let things linger and cause disharmony or  don’t allow “unreliable” to be applied to you.”

In scripture it states:

All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbour’s work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads.

Galatians 6:4-5 NRSV

And in Colossians it says:

Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters, since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you serve the Lord Christ.

Colossians 3:23-24 NRSV

Makes me think if I have been unreliable at times. Do I follow through with integrity, work that I promise to do? Or do I get slack and just worry about myself and not care about how my choices can affect others?

During this Lenten Season is God asking me, “How is your reliability?”

Can you be depended upon?

Are you a good representative of me?

You stand in for Christ – do you do a good job?????

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Every week groups of ladies meet together to chat about the things I raise in my weekly blog post and to chat about life in general. We call these ‘Heart Connect’ groups.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Do you find it difficult to be reliable? If so, what inhibits you? If not, how do you remain reliable?

Have you ever thought about the connection between reliability and integrity? Why do you think there is a connection?

What can you do to become more reliable and a person of integrity?

Start by being on time or even 5-10 min early for an appointment, regularly or all the time.
