Needing God’s Wisdom

I have been unwell for about 3 months now and my energy levels have not crept past 2 or 3 out of 10. Accordingly, some of the household chores have gone by the by. Now that I am on my feet more and my coughing has subsided to a reasonable volume and frequency, I can see the dust, dirt and grime that needs wiping and scrubbing to bring the house back to cleanliness.

It may take a little while to do this, because I start out the day with good intentions and then by the afternoon run “out of puff.” Definitely the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Still recovering and building up my stamina again.

It made me feel good when my physiotherapist stated to “give it time.” He explained it like this. Someone who had been in hospital for 2 weeks bedridden has lost 50% of his or her muscle mass.

And there’s me trying to do all those extra chores in one day. The ones that have been neglected for 12 weeks.

The Spirit within me then whispered into my Heart. ‘Ok, now that you are getting your energy back, how about taking more time in Prayer.’ I had been very slack while I had been sick. Slack, not really, because my frail body  was unwell. I had brain fog and so could not think, my mind was such a blank and my concentration was terrible. I kept falling asleep.

So as I improved, my ability to pray improved. There were decisions I needed to make about some areas in my life that had come up. I really needed God’s wisdom for those decisions. So I turned to the Book of Wisdom – Sirach.

There is but one who is wise, greatly to be feared,
    seated upon his throne—the Lord.
It is he who created her;
    he saw her and took her measure;
    he poured her out upon all his works,
upon all the living according to his gift;
    he lavished her upon those who love him.

Sirach 1:8-10 NRSV

The Lord is the wise one to be honoured and adored. He gives wisdom to those He loves, so to some degree I will get some of that wisdom because He loves me. All of us, who He loves, will be blessed with some wisdom from above.

For those who are in awe of the Lord it states in verse 16 there is fullness of Wisdom.

To fear the Lord is fullness of wisdom

Sirach 1:16 NRSV

That’s because we are so close to the Lord, so in honour of Him, listening to Him, that He honours us with His wisdom for our lives.

We can truly believe and act upon the advice in scripture:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NRSV

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’

Love

    My prayers are with you on your healing journey; what a blessed time to be able to be still and listen to the voice of God. I know it’s frustrating to not be well and to see chores and more left undone. Thank you for sharing your journey and the scriptures here. They are powerfully helpful and great reminders, always, of where we get our wisdom from. Remember too that it’s always okay to ask for help…from others, from God.

    My favourite of the Wisdom books – Sirach! And on a car bumper… Job 28:28: “And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is understanding.'”

    I believe sometimes God gives us “forced rest” by way of illness/health problems. His timing, His Will in His Wisdom for what’s best for us — we may not understand but need to trust.

    As a Carer, significant illness was the only temporary “rest” I had in my role, rest I had sorely needed but could not take. Totally understand burn-out, difficulty praying even with promptings of grace, and feelings of failure in home duties. Each day is a fresh start — thank you, Lord! Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful! May the Lord heal you, gift you His wisdom & keep you in His loving care.

    Oh Rosemary I am sorry to hear how unwell you have been I feel so comfortable talking to you as a friend and yet you are in another country so far away from me in Canada and do not know me, but I feel warmth when I hear you speak of the Lord. I pray Jesus as our physician lays his hands on you and you become stronger with the help of The Holy Spirit. I know what you mean when you say it was difficult to concentrate on prayer as I have undergone surgery recently with complications post operatively . Saying the rosary and never remembering where I was as you say you just keep drifting off. But I am on the mend and will say the rosary for your healing.
    God Bless
